I took my pup out for a run today. We did week 1 of the couch to 5k program, which is just 60 second runs and 90 second walks, all on grass so not too hard on his young bones. He really enjoyed it, he has a very smooth gait and covers the ground effortlessly. He’d go further easily but I don’t think it’d be good for him at all. I’ll stick to this for a good few weeks and maybe go up to week 2 in a month or so. He’s 5 months old tomorrow, hard to believe we’ve had him for only 2 1/2 months, he fits in around here like he’s been here all his life. Loves to snooze on the couch!!
I’m working tomorrow night, so I’ll take both dogs out with me in the morning for week 1. Miss 7 may come with me, if she’s up in time. Both she and Master 5 have had a nasty cold, so have been taking it really easy. They’re both entering the Bribie Beach Bash in October, a 3km run along the beach. They’re looking forward to it. Can’t take the dogs there though.
I took Sinner out today for a quick 5k before my hubby left early for work. I’d pulled up fine after the weekend, the couple of 8km walks and the nearly 4km run up the farm tracks. My legs felt great. I ran fine, no problems there, did around 37 minutes for 5k so a bit slower, but boy, when I’d finished, my legs just ached. Obviously the walking had taken its toll. I’ve been a bit stiff all day today, and am looking forward to putting my feet up and getting to bed. On a more positive note, my shin feels fine!!
I’ve worked out my next goal. Next year in Warwick, they have a weekend of running in May - 5 events over 2 days. Total distance 42.2km. I want to do the 10km uphill run on the Sunday morning. I’ll need to find a 5k to 10k program, and I’ve been finding that the elliptical trainer is keeping the strength up in my legs without hurting my shin.
So much of running is mental, I reckon. When I head out for a run, I always run away from our estate, because when I turn around and come back, it’s easier. All in the mind, I know, but I use it to my advantage to extend my distance. I just add a little distance on the outward part of my run, so on the way back, I’m cruisin’.
It has been a long time since my last post. Between an absent hubby and lots of coughs and sniffles, I haven’t been running nearly as much as I would like but I have been getting out whenever I can. My hubby was home for a few days because of the rain and I have been making the most of every opportunity to get out for a run while he’s here to look after the kids.
I went out on Friday morning in the drenching rain. I started out jumping over puddles and finished up just plodding straight through them as I couldn’t muster the oompff too jump over them. I came home exhausted and dripping wet but felt good. Jaydee loved it. He has really missed our regular runs.
We went to my grandfather’s farm, west of Toowoomba, for the weekend. Sunday morning I was up relatively early and headed off for another run. It was so nice. No smelly car fumes. Just quiet and really peaceful as I ran down a road that was little more than a bush track that wound through the cypress pine trees. Jaydee ran ahead of me off-leash. I was a bit worried that he would take off if he spotted a kangaroo but we didn’t see any and he stayed pretty close. Around halfway through the run, I encountered a mob of cows on the path which didn’t faze me too much except that there was also a big black bull amongst them and he didn’t look like he wanted to move. Jaydee ran ahead of me, rounded up the cows and moved them off the road. He had to bark to get the bull moving but he managed it. Job completed he left them alone and came back to me. He seemed so pleased with himself. I was very impressed. I felt good after this run and I think it was a bit easier than the last one.
My hubby plans to head off again this morning so I was up early and heading out to get in one more run while I can. It was perfect running weather. I pushed it a bit harder this morning and came home quite exhausted. There really are too many hills around here. I still don’t think I have run the full 5k but I must be pretty close.
Last night I bought a very cheap manual treadmill that was adverstised in the paper. It is hard going but I’m hoping that I will be able to still have something that resembles a run when I don’t have someone to keep an eye on the kids. I just hope the kids don’t trash it before I get a chance to really test it out.
I have now finished the couch to 5k program and I think it has been fabulous. I am so pleased we did it. It feels good to set a goal and achieve it. Our new goal is the mighty 10km. We can do it!
Well, we didn’t go camping last weekend at Tin Can Bay, floodwaters had cut the road out there in 5 places, and there was a landslide on the highway. Weird weather, but some good rain. We were all sitting there on Friday, kids disappointed, everything packed, and I thought, blow it, let’s go away anyway. Checked the radar and the weather was least inclement out to the west, so we went to Stanthorpe. We stayed in the most comfortable little farm house and did a lot of walking. On Saturday afternoon, we walked about 8km around the farm exploring, then on Sunday morning I went out for a run up the farm lane. I only did 3 1/2 km, mostly uphill on boggy ground, so it was fairly hard going, but I was pleasantly surprised how comfortable my legs felt. Then on Sunday morning we walked another 8 or so km around the farm. The dogs and the kids loved it, we’ll definitely be going back there. We’ve rebooked Tin Can Bay for October, so Roseanne and I will get our run along the foreshore soon.
Here’s a picture of where I ran on Sunday morning. It was lovely.

Just half an hour as I had to pick up Miss 7 from Girl Guides, but it was very comfortable.
I’m going to take the kids on a 3km fun run at Bribie Island in October, along the beach, should be really nice. I’ve also told my hubby I want to run in the Lamington Classic next year, so he needs to do it this year cos he’ll be missing out next year.
I’ve been reading my dog forum again and it’s so distressing how many dogs are being put to sleep because they’re not wanted. I really efel very upset, these dogs don’t deserve to die. I’m even more motivated to organise a “run for rescue”,will start with one here in Brisbane to see how it goes, but if it works, then maybe we could do something in each capital city, with funds raised going to the small private rescue groups who do so much out of their own pocket. My dogs don’t know how lucky they are!!
I went out this afternoon with Sinner, it was nice and cool, and I did another 6km in around 38 minutes. Felt good, bit tired towards the end but I iced my shin thoroughly afterwards, and it’s feeling great.
Been thinking about how far I’d end up running, and since I can do an Endurance Test with the dogs, and that’s 20km, I figure I’ll get to half marathon distance eventually. I don’t really feel any motivation to do any more, but I guess that can change down the track. Can’t see myself doing 100km like my hubby does though!!!!
I had a video to watch while on the trainer today, it was about the euthanasia law in the Northern Territory and how the Federal Senate overturned that law to again make euthanasia illegal. It was 55 minutes long and really engrossing. I ended up staying on the trainer for that long and when the movie finished, Miss 7 said, come on Mum, you can do an hour. So I did. Wasn’t that hard really. I must be getting quite fit. I may get out for a run on the weekend or maybe Monday morning, I figure I might run once a week and spend the rest of the time on the trainer to keep my legs strong. The dog will survive!!
I got to go out for a run this afternoon, just did the 5km, and boy did it hurt!! Not so bad when I was running, but when I got home, my shin was so sore it was hard to walk on that leg, and I’d also strained my groin. No idea how that happened. I’ve made an appointment with a podiatrist for 2 weeks time, this is just awful. I’ll be taking it really easy until then, and spending a bit more time on the elliptical trainer.
Went out for a late afternoon run today. It was nice and cool, and by the time I got back, it was just on dusk. A really nice time of day. I was listening to week 9 of C25k podcast, and had a 30 minute run to do. I felt pretty good when it had finished, so I thought I’d see how far I could go. Ended up stopping at 6km, which was done in just over 39 minutes. That’ll do, I’ll go back to 5km, just wanted to have a go. I was a bit sore in the knees after that effort, but I guess from a psychological point of view, I have no doubt I’ll get to 10km. I still remind myself that it wasn’t so long ago that I struggled so hard with doing 6o minute jogs and 90 minute walks in week 1. I don’t think there can be anything harder than that!!!
We went out two days ago for another week 1 of couch to 5k but Mr 5 just didn’t want to go. He was too tired, he had an itchy foot, he had a stitch… and that was after only a short distance. He complained so much we ended up just going home early. Miss 7 was really disappointed.
This morning I realised that he was feeling left out because the mp3 player earphones didn’t fit in his ears really well so he couldn’t use it. So I offered him the Garmin, which measures distance. He was rapt in that, so off we went. They did great, finished the 30 minute week 1 program and went the long way home, total of 3.36km. The dogs enjoyed it too, but I had some difficulties. My shorts kept falling down, and dealing with that as well as two dogs who were determined to make macrame with their lead - well, it would have made a funny video.
Not sure if I’ll get out for a run this weekend, a few things on but I only need half an hour, so I’ll see what I can swing.
